As a Maker, the pre-production phase is where the foundation of a successful creative project is built. From script drafts to talent sourcing, this is your opportunity to collaborate with the brand to shape the creative vision before production begins.

Before getting started, check out our curated list of Production Resources that can help guide you through your project.

In this article, we will review:

🛠️ Pre-Production Workflow

Once a project is matched to you, you’ll begin developing the necessary pre-production service materials and submit them for brand feedback and approval.

Here’s how the process typically works:

1️⃣ Begin Work on Services

Start building the creative services based on the project brief and creative expectations set by the brand.

2️⃣ Submit Services for Review

Upload your services to the platform for the brand to review.

3️⃣ Brand Provides Feedback

The brand will be notified to review your submitted services and will leave notes in the Brand Feedback section of each item.

4️⃣ Brand Requests Changes (If Needed)

If edits are needed, the brand will click Request Changes and submit their feedback.

5️⃣ Revise and Resubmit

Incorporate the brand’s notes and re-upload an updated version of the service material.

6️⃣ Await Approval

Once the brand is satisfied, they will mark the service as Approved. Once all services are approved, the project will automatically move into production.

🤝 Collaborating with Brands on Feedback

The platform makes it easy for brands to submit notes, but the clarity and completeness of that feedback can vary. Here’s how you can help:

  • Encourage the brand to use the Brand Feedback section for all notes

  • Ask for timestamped comments or references to specific elements when applicable

  • Remind the brand to combine input from all stakeholders into one round of feedback

  • Politely reinforce the importance of timely reviews to keep production on schedule

Tips for a Smooth Pre-Production Phase

Align with Brand Guidelines: Double-check that all materials reflect the brand’s voice, tone, and visual identity.

Encourage Timely Approvals: Remind brands to approve services at least 48 hours before shoot day to avoid delays.

Confirm Product Arrival (If Applicable): If physical products are needed for the shoot, confirm they’ve been shipped early enough to arrive before the scheduled production date.

Service Status

Your service status reflects the status of pre-production services.

  • No Action Needed: service does not need review.

  • Ready to Start: service is ready for you to begin working on.

  • Sent for Review: services have been submitted for Brand review.

  • Changes requested: the Brand has requested changes.

  • Completed: all pre-production services have been approved.
